Patty Martin has lived in New Mexico over four years, and already gives to our clay community here in big ways. With her recent appointment to Vice President of the NMPCA board, we take time to get to know her history with the medium. 

How did you first get interested in clay? 

I took a 2-hour class from a ceramic artist. The moment my hands touched the clay, I knew that my life would never be the same! It took me about a year to get set up to be able to create on a regular basis, but have been completely smitten with ceramics since. My early work was ugly and heavy, and has slowly improved. 

Describe your studio. 

I have a lovely, large, light-filled studio that fills my heart with joy each time I enter it! With room for a wheel, slab roller, space for hand-building, and a kiln, I am set to create! The studio has many windows with views of nature. A covered portal extends my space, and an outside entrance makes it easy to welcome visitors.

Describe your “work.”

I love exploring various methods and styles, but my work is primarily whimsical pieces that are inspired by nature. I make functional and sculptural pieces, and much of it is yard art.

Describe any work you do that promotes “clay community."

I am a past president for the SFCC Clay Club, and currently serve on the board. I am the Vice President of NMPCA, and have served on the board for a year. In addition, I volunteer with the Eldorado Arts and Crafts Association and participate in the Eldorado Studio Tour. 

When you are not working in your studio, what do you enjoy? 

I am a student at Santa Fe Community College, and enjoy hiking, gardening, reading, cooking and spending time with family and friends. 

Do you play music in your studio? If yes, what do you listen to? 

If I am not listening to a book, I love playing energetic and inspirational music that spans various genres. Some of my current favorite groups are Bleachers, Young the Giant and Generationals.

What other pottery do you have in your home? 

I love collecting work made by friends and artists who inspire me.

What caused you to join NMPCA? Describe involvement with NMPCA, and how many years you have been involved.

I was invited to attend an annual meeting a few years back, and decided to join NMPCA two years ago because of the connections and activities. I am currently serving on the board and am Vice President. I have been on the Celebration of Clay committee, have participated in a work weekend at Ghost Ranch and am currently working with the Armstrong Grant.
